Summer Reading Choice Book Revisions

Someone Like You

Over the summer I read a fantastic book called: Someone Like You written by: Sarah Dessen.  The theme to this extraordinary book is "sometimes you have to sacrifice things for the ones you love."  This theme is shown throughout the book when Halley's mom looses trust in her and when Scarlett ditches school for her baby.

Halley sacrifices her moms trust in her for her best friend.  Halley ditches school, sneaks out of the house, and does many things behind her mother's back for her best friend Scarlett.  In the book, Halley and her mom get in a huge fight because Halley has been lying to her mom.  Halley only lies to her mom because she doesn't want her mom to know that her best friend, Scarlett, is pregnant.  This example shows the theme "sometimes you have to sacrifice things for the ones you love" because Halley is ruining her relationship with her mom to help out her best friend.  Possibly Halley feels that helping out her best friend is more important at the time than being honest with her mother.  This could explain why Halley is doing all of these bad things at school and not being honest with her mom just to help out someone she really cares about, Scarlett.

Another example of how the theme in this book is explained is how Scarlett sacrifices her education for her baby.  In the book, Scarlett is caught frequently missing and ditching school.  This is illustrated in many ways.  Scarlett ditches school to go to a doctor's appointment and frequently doesn't attend school because she's pregnant.  Scarlett has to go to a doctor's appointment, but her mom doesn't know about the baby yet.  So, Scarlett skips school and also makes her best friend, Halley, and Halley's boyfriend ditch school to take her there.  When it's closer to Scarlett's due date, she many times doesn't attend school at all.  This detail shows how Scarlett sacrifices part of her education for the one she loves, her baby.  Education is very important in growing up and being successful in life but even though Scarlett knows how important it really is she still chooses to sacrifice it for the health of her baby.  Scarlett also in some ways sacrifices the relationship with her best friend, Halley because she is having her ditch school as well which could potentially damage there relationship as best friends.  Despite all of this Scarlett does everything she can for her child.

Overall, this amazing, realistic fiction novel shows that "sometimes you have to sacrifice things for the ones you love."  Halley and Scarlett definitely did that whether it was skipping school, and lying for a friend, or missing school to make sure that the one you love will be okay.  All of this is shown in this heart-felt novel Someone Like You.

Metacognitive Blog: And Then There Were None

And Then There Were None was my first essay of 9th grade.  There were many changes from my first essay to my final.  Some changes I made to my final essay include punctuation, not saying the same details over and over again, adding more commentary, and more improved vocabulary.  Sharing an essay with an adult was the most helpful support for me in this essay because my mom didn't know the book so she could tell me if it made sense, and she also helped remind me about my punctation which was really helpful.  Having my mom revise my essay was also most helpful because she read my whole essay as like a teacher would read it to see if it is organized and isn't confusing.  The teachers comments were also very helpful too though to see what I need to improve in my writing and change for future essay's.  To continue improving throughout this year mostly what would help me is continuing to getting feedback from adults, and teachers to see what I can do better.  Other than that I think the only other thing would be continuing to practice with grammar and punctuation.  I think some places I have room to grow as a writer this year would be to be more concise in my writing and less redundant.  Also I think I could improve my spelling, and use of strong words.  Overall, I think that many techniques have helped me improve as a writer but I will continue to improve more this year too!
